Chris Ferguson is in his eleventh year as band director at Braxton Craven. Prior to this position, Mr. Ferguson taught for several years at both the middle school, high school and collegiate levels. Bands under his direction have received consistent superior and excellent ratings at music festivals throughout the southeast including Carowinds (Charlotte), Fiesti-Val (Myrtle Beach), Universal Studios (Florida), Six Flags (Atlanta), and numerous state and district music festivals. In addition, his band has commissioned and premiered works by Larry Clark, Timothy Loest and Mekel Rogers. Mr. Ferguson appears as a guest clinician across the state and has conducted bands at the UNCG Summer Music Camp for numerous years. He is a graduate of Appalachian State University (B.M.) and the North Carolina School of the Arts (M.M.), where his teachers included Dr. Harold McKinney and James Miller, co-principal trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2006, Mr. Ferguson was granted National Board Certification in Music Education by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Chris Ferguson is in demand as a freelance musician. Mr. Ferguson has performed with the Ringling Brothers & Barnum Bailey Circus, USAir Jazz Band, Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, Longhorn Rodeo Band, Starlight Orchestra (Bush Gardens), Disneyland All-American College Band (Disneyland, California), Carolina Ballet, Carolina Chamber Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Kiev Symphony (Russia), Western Piedmont Symphony, and the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Symphonies. From 2001 - 2008 Mr. Fegruson held the position of principal trombone with the Long Bay Symphony in Myrtle Beach, SC. Currently, he is principal trombone with the Salisbury Symphony and a member of the Giannini Brass. As a member of the Giannini Brass, Mr. Ferguson can be heard on four recordings: Christmas with the Giannini Brass, Baroque Banquet, Mit Freuden zart (With Tender Joy): Moravian Chorales for Brass, and Summertime! - all can be found on iTunes! Additional recordings include Music from the 1996 Disney All American College Band (Disney Studios), Rejoice, Rejoice Believers, (Moravian Music Foundation) and several catalog recordings for Carl Fischer Publications.
As a composer, Mr. Ferguson draws on his experiences as an educator and performer to write music that is both fun and accessible to young musicians. His works are performed and enjoyed by ensembles throughout the country. His compositions and arrangements are published by Carl Fischer and Excelcia Music Publishing.
Chris Ferguson resides in Salisbury, NC with his beautiful wife Sonya (a fellow band director), son Thomas (15 years old) and son James (11 years old).
